Introducing Stan Hagen
Mr. Hagen was appointed Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts on August 15, 2006. Previously he served as the Minister of Sustainable Resource Management, the Minister of Human Resources, and the Minister of Children and Family Development with this Government.
He has been a major contributor to the development of British Columbia. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1986 as the MLA for Comox and served as the Minister of Advanced Education, Job Training, Science and Technology and as the Minister of State for the Vancouver Island and the Coast Region. Stan was responsible for promoting the TRIUMF-KAON science project, establishing the Commonwealth Distance Education Centre and Science World, and developing and initiating the Passport to Education Program. The Small Business Assistance and Business Start-Up Programs were established when he was the Minister of Regional and Economic Development and as Minister of Education he chaired the Canadian Council of Ministers of Education.
Mr Hagen created and managed his own construction company. His many community involvements have included the Heart and Stroke Foundation; Big Brothers of the Comox Valley; Courtenay Youth Music Camp; the North Island College Foundation; the Comox Strathcona Regional District Economic Development Commission; the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce; the West Coast Regional Chair of the MILAP Salmonoid Enhancement and Job Creation Program; and founding President of the Comox Valley Community Foundation.
Stan was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Simon Fraser University in 1998. Born in New Westminster in 1940, Stan and Judy married in 1967 and have five children.
